From stunning palaces, great rock cut carvings and stone images, amazing temples, hill stations and wildlife sanctuaries there is always something to impress in this state.\r\n\r\nThere are several different beliefs about how Tripura got its name, but the most common and enduring belief is that the state got its name from Tripura Sundari. This is the presiding deity of the land and is the most famous as one of the 51 pathos of Hindu pilgrims.\r\n\r\n<strong>Background Information on Tripura<\/strong>\r\n\r\nLocated in the north eastern regions of India is Tripura. Mainly consisting of low lying hills and mountains up to 3000 feet and plains; much of the population lives on the plains with agriculture and rice being the main occupation and the main crop respectively. The industry and urbanization of this state is underdeveloped here however, despite this Tripura is still the second largest rubber producer after the state of Kerala in south India.\r\n\r\nThere are several tribes here in Tripura including but not limited to the Tripuri, reang, Jamatia, Noatia and the halam. Apart from the tribal population however close to 70% is of Bengali origin.\u00a0 Tripura was originally an independent kingdom but was merged with India in 1949.\r\n\r\n<strong>Tourism and culture in Tripura<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThere is a rich and diverse cultural heritage in Tripura; consisting mainly of music, dance, fine arts and handicrafts.\u00a0 As with much of the subcontinent music is at the heart of every cultural identity, and the tribal people of Tripura are no different. There are indigenous instruments such as the Sarinda, Chonpreng and Sumui, which is a type of flute. Dance is also a great expression of culture in the state.\r\n\r\nThere has been a long association of the poet Rabindranath Tagore with Tripura which has added yet another dimension to the already brimming cultural cap.\r\n\r\n<strong>Flora and Fauna in Tripura<\/strong>\r\n\r\nMuch of the flora and fauna of the region come from Indo-Malayan and Indo-Chinese sub regions.\u00a0 There is a great variety in Tripura and there are no less than 379 types of trees, 320 shrubs, 581 herbs, 165 climbers, 16 climbing shrubs, 35 ferns and 45 epiphytes which all make for a gardeners paradise.\r\n\r\nSipahijola Wildlife Sanctuary, Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary, and Roa Wildlife Sanctuary are the three wildlife sanctuaries in the state with several national parks also being present.\r\n\r\n<strong>Sports in Tripura<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe major sports of Tripura like much of India are football and cricket. The state capital has its own football club championships every year which is formatted in the traditional league and knock out formula. As an eastern state Tripura also has a team that plays in the Indian domestic Cricket competition known as the Ranji Trophy.
