However, a number of epics and traditional histories do show that the city has not only been present in the past but that it has been one of the most important cities in Asia. It is now considered the gateway to the North-West Region of India, and a considerable amount of commerce passes through this route.

Tourism in Guwahati

A lot of people travel to Guwahati for a number of different reasons. One major reason would be business, but the city also holds a lot of temples and important religious areas that pilgrims would like to visit.

One such place to tour would be the Kamakhya temple. This is considered the most important shrine for the goddess Shakti in the whole of India. Constructed in the 17th century, it contains no image of the goddess. Instead, it has the carved image of Yonni of the goddess, and this is the main object of reverence within the temple. It does have images of lord Ganesha and the goddess Chamundi.

A recent addition to the number of temples that could be visited in Guwahati would be the Sri Purva Tirupati Balaji Temple. The main deity of this temple is lord Balaji. The structure itself is pure white, and the beauty as seen from the outside is already indescribable. Inside is a four-ton rock carving of the deity, and what is imposing is that the rock was not placed together. The carving itself was done from a single rock formation, and it makes the carving one seamless piece.

There is also a zoo in the city that takes the name of both the city and the state. Known as the Guwahati zoo and the Assam state zoo, it has the perfect environment for the growth of the animals. Asiatic lions, Bengal tigers, and horned Indian rhinoceros are among the exotic animals that are held in this zoo. Anyone who is included in the tour of this zoo would definitely enjoy the sights and sounds that it has to offer.

Guwahati is not just a business capital, but a place where to witness both culture and natural beauty of India, so make it a part of your tour to India. A tour of the city would provide any visitor with the idea of what India is like, and would want to go further into India in order to experience more of the country’s culture.

Facts:

Area: 216 km sq

Altitude: 55m

Geographical Location: 26°08’N 91°46’E / ?26.13°N 91.77°E

Climate: Tropical Monsoon Rainforest Climate

Rainfall: 2,818mm

Primary Rainy Season: June to September

Temperatures 6 -38c

Language: Assamese, Bengali (in the three districts of Barak Valley)

Population: 808021

Every country has at least a city or state that can represent its culture and population.
